Fj40 disk brake conversion
I have a 68 FJ40 that I have done the mini truck disk brake swap on and have some clearance issues. I used 81 cruiser rotors (vented) and 86- 91? IFS calipers. Everything went well until I bolted the wheels back on. The very inside edge of the caliper hits the wheels. I got some 93 calipers...Hey, I got the FJ60 front end out of the truck, cleaned, up and started disassembling the tie-rods. My questions are numerous and varied: I was looking at the 60 tierods and comparing to the 40 stockers. The 60's are much stouter and look like they might be the ticket. I am thinking of using...I converted my '74 FJ40 to front discs ~13 years ago. Removed the residual valve in the front circuit of the drum brake master cylinder. Did not fit a proportioning valve to the rear brake circuit. No issues, worked great for ~6 years (then I upgraded to rear discs with the proportioning valve and and a 4wd mini-truck master cylinder.) Regards ...

Re: fj40 disc brake conversion help Post by Sadam_Husain » Sun Oct 16, 2011 8:55 pm My mate did one of those disc brake conversions in the mid 1980's with crown callipers, back then you couldnt get 60 or 70 series swivel housings with calliper brackets for a straight swap over conversion.This conversion was designed for use on an 8/80 to 7/70 FJ40 or 55 (may work on early years but brake line fittings are different and you may need a dual circuit hydraulic system). This kits is less expensive than repairing your factory drum brake setup. This is a complete kit with everything you need to bolt on. Rear Disc Brake Kit includes:This conversion kit will allow you to remove and replace your old, inadequate drum brake set with a superior disc brake set. It was designed and sold for Off-Road Use Only. It was not designed or tested for on road use. It lists the Early FJ40 brake conversion as only being available for year models 68 to 74. Why is this? I have a 66 and was hopeing to do this conversion, but now it would seem this is not gonna work.Your brake lines are currently 9mm fittings. You will need to add a 10mm brake line nut to the rear circuit = $2.49. The front brake lines you will need to run all new 10mm modern Toyota lines. We recommend just buying a roll of 3/16 brake line at your local auto parts store. 4 Brake line nuts for making the new lines at $2.49 each.
