BDS doesn't make a true late late model FJ40 lift kit (or didn't at the time). A bunch of stuff changed in 8/80 that means most FJ40 lift kits WILL NOT work. My recommendation is to start with the 4" lift. You can run 33" tires easily, or cut the rear wheel wells and run 35" tires. My question is could I use the skyjacker FJ-40 lift on my FJ-45 I know the front ends are the same but the rears I am unsure of. I hope that I can because that would be the craps if I couldn't. I didn't have to lengthen any drive shafts, but I have running the correction shims on front and back. Also running 35x12.5x15s MTs.
