Soldier+necromancer is OK for sword and board and if you get Krieg's it absolutely rocks. 1h and shield is best for retaliation builds imo. No idea how to make s&b work with ice tho. When using Battlemage you have many ways to straight up ignore the hits coming your way so it's a great class to go 2H with and end up with way more dmg. I use both though and switch between regularly.
